Speed

From Metaforce TTRPG

Definition

Speed for a character or creature, is how much distance they can move over an interval of time, usually Action Frames. The default definition of Speed is Land/Walking speed, the humanoid form of travelling along the ground. Speed can measure other forms of movement as well.

Movement Types

Out of the numerous movement types, Walk is the key movement speed to which all other speeds are derived. Other movement types are described below.

Walk

A character's Walk speed is the distance they can travel across land, whether or not they have legs or levitate across. Every creature and character has a Walk speed even if this value is 0 and use other means to move around. Humanoid creatures use their legs to walk and run.

The default speed for a Medium-sized humanoid is 15ft per Action Frame. Size affects a creature's default Walk speed, lowering it for smaller creatures and increasing it for larger ones. Character can increase their movement by an additional 5ft by Dashing, provided they spend their action frame moving and nothing else.

For a character to walk, they must be upright. Lowering down to a Crouch or Prone position will slow them down and modify interactions to and from that character. Crouched or Proned characters use their Walk speed for determining speed modifications.

Dashing

Dashing is a specific form of the Walk speed that can be used provided the character concentrates on movement and nothing else. This means a character can't dash if they combine movement with an attack, ability or anything else that could slow a character down.

Characters of Medium size or smaller gain 5ft Speed while dashing. Taking a Medium character to 20ft per action frame. The dash bonus increases by another 5ft for 2 Size-Rating points they possess.

"Whereas the human gets to move 5ft faster while dashing, up to 20ft per action frame. The Size-2 Half-Giant gets a 10ft dash bonus, up to 30ft per action frame. The Size-4 Stone-Giant gets a 20ft dash bonus, taking them up to 50ft per action frame. A Size-16 Kaiju can get a 40ft dash bonus, allowing them to move up to 130ft per action frame."

Climb

A character without a Climb Speed is usually half their Walk speed rounded down. Climb-based movement allows a character to ascend and traverse sheer and vertical surfaces, sometimes along inverted surfaces such as ceilings.

If a character does not have a Climb speed, they may be restricted on what kind of surfaces or angles they can cross normally. If a character does have a climb speed, their climb speed matches what has been stated or else it is the same as their walk speed, plus they may benefit from climbing other surface types and inverted surfaces.

While climbing, the character is able to use their climb speed onto and away from a Climbing surface, much like a character can leap to and off the ground with their walk speed. This helps climbers jump from point to point without losing their climb speed benefits.

Swim

A character without a Swim Speed can traverse in, and on top of bodies of liquid such as water at half their walk speed. Some creatures without a proficiency in Swimming or Athletics may not be able to swim at all, making this a movement type that requires training to use.

Since Swimming allows three-dimensional movement within a body of liquid, movement can differ depending on the angle one moves through the liquid. Moving horizontally in any direction, or moving directly up or down has no penalty, moving diagonally in any axis at a 45 degree angle costs double the movement in both directions.

"The Diver enters the water and begins to descend down to the wreck below. They have to move closer to the site so they move downwards and forwards, they spend all their action frames just moving so they manage to move 10ft down and 10ft forward each frame. Once the diver was above the wreck, they could simply move downwards at full speed of 20ft."
