Rest

From Metaforce TTRPG
Rest is a world-building mechanic to help characters recover from injury and fatigue and simulate how humanoids would normally go about their day. There are two types of rest, Short and Long, and there is also a resource characters have called Rest Points which determine how many times a character can Short-Rest and how effective their Long rests are.

Characters own a number of Rest Points (RP) equal to their level, this is restored after every Long Rest. RP is required to benefit from healing from a Short-Rest but is not required for a Long-Rest. Spending multiple Rest Points on a Short-Rest can multiply the amount of healing given during a Short-Rest.

During any rest, the amount of points given to a character to heal or recover can be distributed to regaining lost HP, or cleansing Exert or other negative Status condition magnitudes. Healing may be limited for characters who have low health, high Exertion and are suffering from many or serious status conditions. It is the player's decision on what ailments to focus on first during Rests.

Short Rest

Rest Time: 10, 30, 60 minutes.

A Short-Rest is a moment of downtime between Long Rests in a character's day, where they perform light activity, tend to their needs and otherwise recovering from whatever came before them.

Whenever a character Short-Rests, they can benefit from natural healing and recovery by spending a Rest Point. Resting for 10 minutes lets a character distribute healing/recovery between their HP, Exert and Status Magnitudes equal to their character Level.

For 30 and 60 minutes rest respectively, the character can gain an additional 1dX or 2dX healing/recovery, where X is their Endurance Attribute die (as if they Exerted). If their Endurance is 0 or less, then they only get 1 or 2 points respectively.

Long Rest

Rest Time: 4 to 8 hours.

Long-Rests are an activity a character can do once per 'day', a long period of rest intended to give the character the most time to recover. A character needs to reserve at least four hours of Long rest to start benefitting from this activity, and ideally rest for up to eight hours.

Long Resting for four hours gives the player an amount of healing/recovery equal to their Body Core value. But for every two hours beyond the fourth, up to the eighth, the character gets to restore an additional Body score amount of HP, Exert and Status cleansing. Making a total of x3 the user's Body score in healing.

Any unused Rest Points (RP), convert into Rest-Healing equal to the character's level times the RP remaining. After a Long Rest, RP is restored to the character's maximum.

Healing Modifiers / Multipliers

There are a number of ways that healing from Rest can be enhanced (or hindered) due to circumstance or the character's use of items or properties. Here are some examples of what may affect Rest-Healing.

Healing Items
The use of Healing items, Medkits and other curatives can enhance the healing process during Rest. Such items will describe how much more effective healing is when used during rest. Normally these will accelerate HP-base healing but may affect Conditions as well.

Not Meeting Needs
Unless the character's biology indicates otherwise, a character must tend to their needs of sleep, eating, drinking and anything else that promotes healthy living. If a character is lacking in one or more of these regards they may have their overall Rest-Resting cut in half, and not be able to cleanse conditions related to things like Hunger or Thirst without consuming the appropriate resource.

A Starving character may be blocked from recovering HP naturally, and a character dying from Thirst may not cleanse Exert. A character who falls unconscious from over-Exertion while unable to recover Exert will die within a day.

Uncomfortable Rest
Resting in extreme conditions such as heat/cold, or dangerous locations may affect rest as if a character's needs are not met. Such places provide half the amount of rest-healing unless adjustments are made to make it more bearable.

Having a Long-Rest interrupted by danger or unpleasant effects will treat the Long-rest as only having a duration of 4 hours even if the entire 8 hour rest was planned.

Unusual Size
If a character's Size is 2 or higher, then healing towards their HP is multiplied by their Size-Rating, thus a Size-2 character gets x2 as much HP healing from rest than if they were normal sized. This multiplier does not affect Exert and other condition magnitude cleansing.
